Before you've heard a signal: a ready gain template
GAIN MGMT · PART 06
You've already learned the basic setups over years; searching for them again every time is just a waste, isn't it? Here's the starting template I've used for years: SOURCE

Of course I don't stay locked to these values; sometimes absurd results show up. If you open a mic at this gain and there's no satisfying sound, there's a problem somewhere. The likeliest culprit is a faulty mic cable — for instance, if one of the hot legs is broken, signal still comes through, but at half strength. When I catch that and say so, many people go "what an ear you have" — but it isn't the ear, it's accumulation and experience.
What matters most is being able to tell that something's wrong. This template isn't only for Yamaha desks — with small adjustments you can start from similar values on almost any desk. With a little experience, doing this prep on different desks genuinely makes your work easier and faster.
Do you have a starting template you set before you've even heard a signal?
