Building a Driver and Building a System Are Two Different Crafts

How a country listens to music is tied directly to its musical culture and its instruments. Every ethnic group has its own style and its own instruments.

Take Turkey. Most of our instruments are fine-toned ones — bağlama, violin, kemençe, tambur, oud, ney, mey, zurna; for percussion, darbuka, tef, davul. Their timbres are thin, and to the human ear they often sound harsh. Amplifying these instruments on stage genuinely tests a technician. But out of a habit that belongs to our culture, instead of looking for the essence of these instruments we usually do the opposite: in the name of giving thin, reedy instruments some "bottom," we break their essence and try — by "toning" them — to create a different instrument altogether.

Some countries, meanwhile, have managed to reconcile centuries of history with the essence of sound. And when it comes to the driver — the heart of the loudspeaker — two countries are far ahead of the rest: Italy and Spain.

Italy is the essence of classical music. Reflecting the essence of instruments one-to-one demands very high-quality, natural systems. Picture it: in an opera house, eighty musicians on stage, and with no system at all you hear everything clear, balanced, each part in its place. But the moment amplification enters, that naturalness and balance no longer hold — it can even become uncomfortable. That is exactly why Italy, just as in its opera houses, always went looking for the most natural system in its concert venues too. That respect for the essence of sound made Italy a master of the driver (RCF, Eighteen Sound). And let's not forget that Italy leads in amplification as well, with PowerSoft.

Spain stayed in the shadows for a long time; nobody trusted that the Spanish could be a serious system manufacturer. But Spain has its own musical culture too. However much it was influenced by the Ottomans, flamenco has a very distinctive timbre — I mean its sound, not its form. The flamenco guitar sounds harsh to us, almost tinny; it rings as if it were hollow, as if some harmonics were missing. The cajón beside it — that box with the hole in the back — is a mid-heavy, coarse timbre. But once that music starts to ring in harmony, those "coarse" sounds suddenly fall exactly into place. The old masters — Paco de Lucía, Ramón Montoya, Niño Ricardo — always preferred that older timbre. Even if today's masters like Vicente Amigo sound fuller and more modern, listen well and you'll hear that the old understanding is still there; better reverb units and a different school of guitar building only make it look closer to an international tone. Don't be fooled. That fidelity to essence made Spain a master of the driver as well (Beyma).

So far the picture looks simple: a country that listens to music with its essence intact also builds the driver that carries that essence. But the genuinely interesting part starts right here.

Because building a good driver and building a good system are two different crafts. Think of the two companies that dominate live sound worldwide: L-Acoustics and d&b. Here's what's interesting — neither giant even manufactures its own drivers. They come from another tradition: the engineering culture of Germany and France. And what they mastered is not the driver but the system — integration, DSP, control, ecosystem. The high damping factor in d&b's amplifiers, for example, means a cleaner impulse response and lower effective latency; it delivers a modular, almost plug-and-play whole.

So Italy and Spain are masters of the essence of sound — the driver; Germany and France are masters of the system. Both are real, but they are two different things. What, then, actually makes a loudspeaker company great? The answer is right here:

A loudspeaker company's real skill is not selling loudspeakers — it is selling systems.

Because a system means driver, cabinet, horn, DSP, amplifier, cabling, rigging, software and remote management. If you can produce all of that in harmony, you have a system. Otherwise you are only selling a component — and the customer runs it with their own DSP and their own settings; the result is never what the designer intended. When I said this to a manufacturer years ago it was received strangely — today everyone talks about ecosystems.

What thinking like a system means was once shown to me beautifully by a manufacturer's chief engineer. In line array systems there's a phenomenon we call coupling: as the number of boxes increases, a rise — a shelf — builds in the low end from roughly 1 kHz downward. Most companies correct this by pulling those lows down with a Low Shelf filter. For years, honestly, I thought the same. But that engineer asked me a very simple question: "Why would you electronically take back the power you gained physically?" They were doing the exact opposite — raising everything above 1 kHz with a High Shelf, scaled to each added box. Instead of throwing away the lows, they were bringing the rest up to meet them. When I asked "and the headroom?", his answer explained why this is a system question at all: the mids and highs had been designed from the very beginning to carry exactly that lift.

That is precisely the difference between a component and a system. Adding a filter afterwards is component work; designing, from the start, the headroom that makes the filter possible is system work. One is a patch; the other is architecture.

So how do you tell whether a system is genuinely good? It isn't easy, because it depends entirely on what you're listening to. With music you don't know, the odds of being wrong are high; with a heavily compressed track you won't hear the fault at all — after all, the point of mastering is to make the sound come out balanced on every system. So listen with your own archive, with recordings you know intimately. The moment you can't hear a detail you're used to, you've found what the system is missing.

And there is a very basic distinction here: correct sound and beautiful sound are not the same thing. A good system doesn't necessarily strike you as "beautiful" at first; it arrives with every frequency in balance and no band sticking out. If it sounds too "beautiful" straight away, that is usually makeup covering what's missing. That is the biggest difference between correct sound and beautiful sound — and I will always take the honest, unmade-up one.

One last preference: I generally like systems that read with a single low driver. On dual low-driver systems, when you come to the centre you hear the vocal frequencies wiped out; many companies go multi-way designs to fix it. But why make two drivers do what one can? In the line array principle, once you fly six or more boxes the low-mids and lows rise on their own anyway. That "bony," natural sound of single low-driver systems has always been my choice.

A loudspeaker is only truly good when both the essence of sound and the system carrying it are respected at the same time. Perhaps the real question for us is this: if we respected the essence of our own instruments — and thought about it like a system — what kind of sound, and what kind of loudspeaker, would come out of it?
